On Friday July 25th, we welcomed a delegation to our Technofilms plant in Gualemala. The delegation was made up by the Ministers of Economy, International Relations, and the Environment, alongside the team that will represent Guatemala in the Global Plastics Treaty in Geneva, Switzerland.
This visit was organized with support from Cámara de Industria and Coguaplast, and looked to showcase our circular economy model up close. We also wanted to open up a discussion regarding the role of flexible packaging in sustainability.
One of the key aspects of this meeting was to explain that the most sustainable solution is not an absolutist answer. Solutions are a result of understanding a context, the needs, and specific conditions of every case.
Through concrete examples such as UHT packaging, special laminates, and high performance packaging. We showed how certain plastic applications, contrary to popular belief, can be more sustainable solutions when compared to other alternatives, as long as they are seen within an integral view of the value chain.
The most important moment during this visit was sharing our circular economy model, a system that looks to recover, transform, and bring post consumer plastics back into new products, thus reducing the dependence on virgin materials.
This conversation highlighted that in order for this model to be actually viable in Guatemala, it is important to have a regulatory environment that encourages it. This includes public policy, incentives and legal frameworks that ease collection, sortation and transformation of recycled materials. This way we can make a circular economy for plastics a scalable and sustainable reality.
This type of spaces strengthen interinstitutional relationships and allow to align visions from key public, private, and organizational sectors. The visit did not only work to showcase our work, but to share technical informatio,n and a different perspective that can support Guatemala in international negotiations.
We did this during a time that the management of plastics is at the center of the global debate. We believe in an educated and facts-based dialogue as the best tool to build real solutions that equalize development, competition, and environmental stewardship.
