As temperatures rise in Bogotá and other regions of the country, it is concerning to see how since the beginning of this year there has been an intense dry season that has heavily impacted mountainous areas. Wildfires have taken up the time of specialized teams such as firefighters, police, civil guard, and other professionals. They all have been working tirelessly to contain the fires.
This situation has not only impacted the flora and fauna of the region, but also the communities closest to the mountains.
Thankfully, February has brought usthe first rains of the year. In spite of the fires being controlled, it is crucial that we learn from this experience and take measures to prevent similar events in the future.
Experts have provided us with valuable recommendations that can help us make a difference. These are some of them:
Not throwing away waste or cigarette butts: Keep natural areas clean. A slightly lit cigarette butt can unleash massive wildfires, take at least two bags for your waste and recycling when visiting parkss.
Responsible fire management: If you decide to have a bonfire, make sure you manage it responsibly by putting it out in its entirety and only using the designated areas.
Learn about local flora and fauna: Environmental education: Learn about the flora and fauna of the region, and share this information with others. When we learn and respect our environment, we can protect and share it more responsibly.
Report any dangerous conditions: If you witness behavior that might pose a fire risk, such as stacked dry branches, or suspect activity, let local authorities know.
Recycle and manage your waste responsibly: Implement effective recycling programs, and separate your waste correctly to reduce the chance of wildfires caused by their mismanagement.
Save water: In dry seasons or heat waves, reduce your water consumption as much as possible. Every effort counts to maintain an equilibrium in our ecosystems.
Let’s be conscious of how frail our ecosystems are, and let’s work together to preserve the natural beauty. With these small actions, we make the difference, and guarantee that our mountains remain green and prosper today and in the future. Let’s take care of our home!
