Approximately a year ago, Grupo Plastilene took an important step towards its environmental commitment by sponsoring a forest in partnership with Saving the Amazon. Today with a newly released report we can assess the tangible impact of this initiative.
The average growth of the planted trees has been approximately 1.75%, with a survival rate of 100%. These results show the capabilities of our ecosystems to recover, validating the viability of these practices.
Monitoring the project biannually is essential to evaluate the progress and how the environment responds to our restoration efforts. This project has allowed us to guarantee the healthy growth of native species and involve the community in each step of the process.
This project has supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). For example, with SDG01 (No Poverty), we have provided monetary support to individuals who are facing economic hardship, thanks to the creation of new opportunities in the region. Besides, the project has improved food security in the community, in line with SDG02 (Zero Hunger).
SDG08 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) has also been addressed, with obvious improvements in the quality of life of the beneficiaries, thanks to the creation of sustainable jobs. Additionally, the collaborative focus has strengthened the link between community and the project.
Lastly, the indigenous community of Tayazu has been an active participant in the project, increasing employment opportunities and accessing specific training.
Through planting trees and the restoration of deforested areas, the project has in its first year stored more than 130 tonnes of CO2. These efforts have supported the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and reinforced the importance of protecting and restoring the green lungs of the planet.
Site design and small monitoring parcels have been key for the success of the project. Through active community participation in choosing the species that were planted has guaranteed their relevance and strengthened the ownership of the project.
Likewise, the detailed analysis of the areas with lower vegetation coverage has allowed to guide the efforts towards the recovery of these spaces. This has increased the impact on forest restoration.
To guarantee long term sustainability, integral monitoring and tracking strategies have been implemented. Through this we have been able to detect and address emerging challenges. For example, how plants, due to climate change, have been increasingly susceptible to diseases and plants.
In summary, the Amazons ecological restoration project sponsored by Grupo Plastilene has proven to be a success story, both socially and environmentally. It is also an example of the transformative and collaborative power amongst companies, NGOs, and local communities.
Let’s continue working towards protecting and preserving our precious natural environment for future generations. Any collaboration and strategic effort proves the commitment Grupo Plastilene has with sustainability and the respect it has to the Amazon’s cultural diversity.
